The UK's second largest city, Birmingham is vibrant, cosmopolitan and brimming with things to do. Situated in the West Midlands in the heart of England, Birmingham has a fascinating history and diverse culture, making it an incredibly interesting destination for a short break or longer holiday. During the Industrial Revolution, the city became known as "the workshop of the world" on account of its immense contribution to manufacturing. Even today, Birmingham is an important manufacturing centre famous for producing, among other things, chocolate and cars. Visitors have been coming to Birmingham for many years and some of the many draw cards include the famous Birmingham Royal Ballet and the National Exhibition Centre, which hosts large scale trade shows and live entertainment events, as well as nearby attractions such as Shakespeare's country, Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Shopping

Birmingham is a paradise for shoppers offering everything from cutting edge designer fashion to stunningly unique jewellery. For an exciting shopping experience, a visit to one of the many markets is a must. Packed with colourful characters and bountiful bargains, the best way to experience market culture is to simply roll up your sleeves and get stuck in. A good place to start is the Bull Ring markets, made up of three permanent markets attracting over 6 million customers every year. Open six days a week, the Bull Ring markets offer everything from top quality fresh meats and dairy products to custom made textiles in the Rag Market.

For dedicated fashion followers, the massive Bullring Mall is the place for you. Housing 160 stores, including Debenhams and Selfridges, the Bullring is where Birmingham locals go to refresh their wardrobes with the latest styles. Of course all that shopping can be hungry work so refuel in one of the 25 different restaurants found inside the mall. Or if you prefer the unique products found in more independent stores, a visit to the Great Western Arcade is highly recommended. Here you will find boutique retailers offering a delightful range of exclusive products in a gorgeous Victorian building.

Birmingham is rightly proud of its jewellery and the Jewellery Quarter, which produces 40% of all the UK's jewellery, is the place to go to see it. If you are in the market for a special ring, the Jewellery Quarter provides the chance to have something specially commissioned in one of the many onsite workshops.

Food and Drink

Birmingham is famous for its 'Balti Triangle' and no visit to the city is complete without sampling at least one delicious curry in one of over 50 restaurants in this area. The best way to experience it is to take a walk around enjoying the delicious spicy aromas that fill the air and just wander into anywhere that takes your fancy. A good tip is to look out for places that are full of local diners and you can be confident that you will be in for a treat.

Of course there is much more to Birmingham cuisine than curry and the city serves dishes from no less than 27 different countries so you are sure to find something to suit all palates. For wonderful international cuisine in an elegant setting, try the Malmaison Brasserie, which offers an excellent wine list and beautifully prepared dishes. Or for a more laid back dining experience that will please all members of the family, Strada on Quayside Broad Street offers hearty Italian fare served up with genuine warmth and character.

Arts and Entertainment

The arts scene in Birmingham is really world class and it is impossible to sample everything in a short trip. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is one of the best cultural centres outside of London and is well worth a visit. The permanent collection is complemented by a changing series of exhibitions and events that ensures there is always something to capture your imagination. For dance fans, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, based at the Hippodrome, is a magical experience and if you happen to be in town when they are it is well worth trying to catch them

Theatre is also popular in Birmingham and, as well as the magnificent Hippodrome, it is also worth checking out the programme at The Alexandra, a magnificent Edwardian theatre showing a wide range of drama, comedy and musicals. Other theatres to look out for include the Old Rep, The Drum and The Crescent.

Hotel and Travel

With its enviable location in the heart of England, Birmingham is easy to reach from almost anywhere in the country and is served by an international airport, large coach and train stations. Birmingham is connected to the national motorway system so if you have your own transport, it is easy to get there by road and within the city you will find the main attractions well signposted.
