The ancient capital of Southampton is the largest city to be situated in the heart of Hampshire just ten miles from the centre of Winchester. Southampton is quickly emerging as a widely popular centre for the arts, business and tourism, being easily accessible in under an hour from London. With a diverse population of 217, 000, Southampton has something to offer for all. Southampton's history is as rich and diverse as any. It has been a settlement since the Roman and Saxon times, although archaeologists believe it to have been inhabited since the stone age. It was known as Clausentum in Roman times. The town became walled in the medieval era and fascinatingly enough, some of it's remains can still be spotted around the city. Why not take a stroll through the beautiful city of Southampton and take a look for yourself? See how many pieces of history you can find. Much of the cities architecture and heritage was destroyed during the bombings in the second world war, so the town does now have quite a modern feel to it. It has grown rapidly over the last thirty years quickly becoming once of the largest cities in England. It's two well known universities University of Southampton and Southampton Solent means it also has the largest population of students.

If its retail therapy you have come for look no further than the busy high street and the more modern West Quay Shopping Centre. Nestled between your usual high street brands such as Marks and Spencers' and John Lewis, you may find many smaller independent stores and boutiques to explore.West Quay Shopping Centre is your destination for the big department stores, River Island, Coast and Dune are all here ready for your custom. The centre provides multi-storey car parking and shop-mobility options are readily available.

Food and Drink

When hunger calls, why not stop for a pub lunch at one of the many pubs in Southampton - over fifty at the last count! Or how about The Food Terrace located on the third floor of the West Quay Shopping Centre? It is the perfect place to relax and take a load off and it is very convenient too! After a nights entertainment why not finish up with a drink in swanky The Orange Room or The Lizard Lounge? Both popular with locals and visitors you will find a concoction to suit any taste. Or if you want the evening to last a bit longer how about trying Oceana or The Earth Club? Both perfect for a fun night out!

When it is time for bed, take your pick of some of the finest hotels around. You could try the Jurys Inn, located in the heart of the city close to the local train station or how about The Highfield House hotel which is ten minutes form the city centre and located next to many of Southamptons most exciting attractions including a variety of art galleries and museums Whatever you do when you get here you can rely on a smooth network of buses and trains to get you into the city and into the heart of Southampton quickly and safely. Southampton is a pedestrian friendly city, so why not make use of the Park and Ride system in operation each day. Its great value for money and promotes Southamptons green ethics. You can even borrow a bike from the various pick up and drop of points around the city - a perfect way to relax while exploring the historic city of Southampton.
